Maryland rep calls out redistricting 'cheats,' files bill asking for new map

Maryland rep calls out redistricting 'cheats,' files bill asking for new map

Maryland state House Majority Leader David Moon (D) called out redistricting “cheats” on Tuesday and pledged to redraw the state’s district lines if others are allowed to do so outside of the traditional census period.

“I’m introducing legislation to redraw Maryland congressional districts if any other state cheats & draws new maps outside of the census period,” Moon wrote in a Tuesday post on the social platform X.

“Seems Trump has convinced Texas, Missouri & others, and FWIW TX did it years ago & got away with it because nobody responded,” he added.

In addition to the statement, Moon posted a screenshot of his bill request form seeking to draft legislation that would be enacted “upon any other US State adopting a new congressional district map outside of the regular decennial census period” and “would require the Maryland Governor to propose a new congressional district map.”

“If the Governor declines to propose a new map within a certain time frame, the General Assembly has the option to propose and adopt a map of their own development,” he wrote.

The move comes after Texas Republicans proposed redistricting the Lone Star State in an effort to maintain a GOP majority in Congress.

President Trump has backed the effort, which has garnered fierce criticism from Democrats.

“If the Republicans are going to redistrict in the middle of the decade, then we have no choice but to do the same,” said Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.).

“Because to do otherwise would be unilateral disarmament.”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) will call a special legislative session this week to consider redistricting, among other priorities.

Redistricting across the country was originally slated for 2030, and an earlier draft date for new maps will likely rewire midterm elections set to take place next year.
