James Carville Changes Course on Kamala Harris, Who He Once Predicted Would Triumph – washingtonredwoodpress.com

James Carville Critiques Democratic Strategy as Kamala Harris Becomes 2024 Nominee

In a candid conversation with MSNBC’s Ari Melber on Tuesday, longtime Democratic strategist James Carville expressed his concerns regarding the party’s decision to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris as the 2024 presidential candidate. Carville lamented that Democrats “didn’t have a choice” in the matter, highlighting the urgency and limitations that shaped this pivotal decision.

As the political landscape shifted in the lead-up to last week’s election, Carville had voiced his apprehensions about a potential Trump victory. Despite his fears, he maintained a confident stance, asserting that Harris would ultimately triumph over Donald Trump. Just a day before the election, he described the GOP nominee’s campaign as having “the smell of a loser,” a phrase that underscored his belief in Harris’s potential to win.

However, following Trump’s decisive victory in the Electoral College and his strong performance in the popular vote, Carville shifted his focus to President Joe Biden. He criticized Biden for remaining in the race until mid-July, arguing that this delay left little room for other candidates to emerge. “By that time, it was far too late for another hopeful, apart from the vice president, to take over the candidacy,” Carville noted, emphasizing the missed opportunities for the party.

Reflecting on the situation, Carville remarked, “We didn’t get to kick the tires, we didn’t get to look under the hood, we didn’t get to look at the trim, we were just given the keys at full sticker price and honestly we had no choice.” His metaphor illustrated the frustration many Democrats feel about the lack of thorough vetting and exploration of alternative candidates.

Carville also praised the “utterly breathtaking” talent within the Democratic Party, expressing a desire to see more candidates step forward. “I would have given anything if we’d gotten six or seven of these people out of the track, let them run around,” he said, suggesting that a more robust primary process could have benefitted the party.

The strategist pointed out that Biden’s prolonged candidacy, especially after a lackluster debate performance against Trump, hindered the party’s ability to showcase its talent. Had Biden exited the race sooner, Carville argued, Democrats could have organized town halls and provided a platform for other candidates to shine.

As the Democratic Party navigates the complexities of the upcoming election, Carville’s insights serve as a reminder of the challenges and decisions that shape political landscapes. With the nomination process now set, all eyes will be on how Harris and the party strategize to rally support and counter the formidable presence of Trump in the race.
